How do I stop TextEdit from asking where to save a new file before creating it?

As I already explained, it is not asking where you want to save. It opens the window so you can choose what file you want to OPEN, or create a new document.

I am running Sequoia 15.5, and TextEdit does not ask anything, or put up any open/save window on its own.

When I start TextEdit, if there was no document previously open, it just opens an "Untitled" window; otherwise it just opens the windows from the last session.

Lucky I suppose. Between my four Macs and the OP's, we get the same result. I should say one of the four is actually my g/f's 2017 iMac running Ventura. Mine are an iMac Pro, an m1 MacBook Air, and an M3 iMac. the only Mac I have that does was you describe, as I mentioned is a Late 2015 iMac running Monterey.

Same here on Sequoia 15.5. Opening it from Spotlight creates a new untitled file directly. No file opening dialog.

Tried opening from Spotlight, Launchpad and the Applications folder in Finder.

I guess the question now is, how exactly is everybody else opening TextEdit?

I guessed it could be via the Dock, but then I tried that as well (I rarely even see the Dock!), and the result is the same as yours, no matter how I launch TextEdit.

Actually, "Apps syncing to iCloud Drive" is not listed on any of my Macs running Sequoia 15.5 or above.

It is listed on the iMac running Ventura, and it's checked but it has the same issue. It's not even my account or tied to any of my computers. I give up.

That's very interesting. Apparently, you can resize the System Settings window, but I suggest you shouldn't. Because if you do, it will display these sheets with information cut off on the bottom and no way to scroll down and view it.

Yikes, that sounds like a terrible new feature!

Correct.

You can always send Apple feedback but it's unlikely to revert to the old behavior.

Not sure why. It does on all my Macs since Ventura.

It may be some hidden setting... I tested three macs, two of tem running Sequoia, and one older running Monterey. They all do NOT show that open/save window...

Yeah, that behavior has been present for many years (even on my old Mac running OS X 10.9)
