What to do when MacBook Pro doesn't recognize external monitor speakers?

I just bought the LG Gram +view 17 (model 17MT70) portable monitor for my Macbook Pro. This is a newly released model and its awesome with a clear bright screen. Much better than the other portable external monitors I've used.

This monitor has 2 built-in speakers which, I believe, are supposed to work through a Displayport/USBc cable.

But when I go into Sound settings and select the monitor, my Macbook doesn't recognize the speakers.

I've tried everything.

-shut my laptop completely off and turned it back on

-tried all of the different USB-C ports on my laptop

-tried it with and without and another external monitor connected

-tried a different display cable

The buttons on the monitor show a speaker icon, but it has red "not available" cross through it. I can't adjust it with the monitor buttons.

Has anybody been able to get the sound to work on an external portable monitor that has speakers?

I stress "portable" because the monitor is powered through the USB cable as well as receive the video feed. According to my research, it should also be able to receive audio over the same cable.

Thank you Zobatec for your reply. I am using the USBc to USBc cable included with the monitor. I am getting power and video through this cable. I didn't think to try it with a second USB power connection. I was hopeful that your suggestion would help, but unfortunately it didn't.

The manual says to connect a min 25w power supply so I connected a 30w apple power supply to the monitor plus the separate USB cable for video and still no sound.

As I mentioned in my original post, this is a new model for LG and I wonder if the sound function is compatible with the MBP. I'm beginning to think it isn't.

I've also connected it using the HDMI cable + separate power cable. I get video, but still the MBP doesn't recognize that the monitor has speakers.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Yes, see image below. As with the Sound settings, I can select it, but none of the controls are active. I clicked on "Configure Speakers" but I was unable to get any sound to come through.

It is interesting that my Dell monitor also shows up in the list, but it does not have speakers. And, the 17MT70 (the model # for my monitor) has a little speaker icon, but still not producing sound.

I later found out that the speaker icon denotes the device that is set out sound output.
