Certain incoming calls going directly to voicemail on iPhone

In Oct my husband and I got identical iphones, 16 pro max, and have software update 18.5 on both. We have Verizon in central NJ.

My phone does not have a problem but starting a few weeks ago some (not all) incoming calls to my husband's phone fail to ring through, go directly to voicemail and do NOT show up as recent calls. The problem happens only some of the time and with the same callers whose calls usually ring through successfully. That tells me that this is not a issue with settings on the phone. Restarting the phone fixes the issue for a few hours, but then the problem sometimes happens again. It happens both at home and away from home.

All settings are the same on both phones. The only difference was that I delete my recent calls and my husband had never cleared his. I did clear all recents on his phone and will let you know if that, by chance, solves the problem.

Sharing the same Apple Account has been discouraged by Apple for years now. It causes all sorts of issues with calls. You can read each others text messages. You can delete photos from each others phones.

You and your husband need to stop sharing the same Apple Account.

Happy to report that the problem has been resolved (at least for now - so far,so good!)

I spent time on the phone with both Apple and Verizon technical support. Wait time for help was minimal for both and the tech folks were very helpful.

I called Apple first. They ran some tests and looked at the history of the phone and could tell that there were brief connectivity issues, as often as every 4 minutes. They referred me to Verizon because the issue was connectivity. The Verizon tech could not see the same frequency of connectivity issues as Apple reported, but surmised that since the issue happened everywhere it was likely a faulty antenna which, on the 16 Pro Max is built into the "frame" of the phone. So I called Apple again and explained what Verizon said.

Both Verizon and Apple overnighted me a reconditioned replacement phone. (When it rains, it pours!). I had cancelled the request with Verizon but the cancellation did not go through, so I just returned the one I got from them. It's been 3 days with the new phone and so far, no problems.

Yes, I guess there was a misunderstanding as when I asked again if you share the same Apple Account, you said yes. No worries.

I honestly don't have a clue then, why some calls are going straight to voicemail and a restart fixes it momentarily, but the behavior returns after a short while. I'd start with speaking with his carrier. Apple doesn't deliver phone calls. Carriers do. But it's somewhat of a mystery why some but not all calls are exhibiting this.

Update: Problem is still happening. The incoming caller never hears that the phone is ringing. The call just goes directly to voicemail as if my husband's phone were turned off. AND sometimes his outgoing call will behave in the same manner. He dials and hears no ringing or sign of connection until the other person's voice mail message begins. A forced reset fixes both incoming and outgoing issues temporarily but within an hour the problems are back.
