External hard drive woes after installing Sequoia

Since installing Sequoia 15.5, I cannot see files on an external drive using Finder. But, using Spotlight, I can search for them, find them and access them.

Disk Utility reports the following:

<Snip>

Checking the fsroot tree.

error: inode with file-id 4737 has doc-id 3674209535 but doc-id tree record has file-id 530005

error: inode with file-id 21223 has doc-id 3892313343 but doc-id tree record has file-id 530146

error: inode (id 393300): invalid parent_id (0)

fsroot tree is invalid.

The volume /dev/rdisk5s1 with UUID FD6C5012-2AFC-3CC1-94A2-0771FB7526EB was found to be corrupt and needs to be repaired.

Verifying allocated space.

Performing deferred repairs.

error: Unable to perform deferred repairs without full space verification

error: Try running fsck against the entire APFS container instead of a volume

The volume /dev/rdisk5s1 with UUID FD6C5012-2AFC-3CC1-94A2-0771FB7526EB could not be verified completely.

File system check exit code is 8.

Restoring the original state found as unmounted.

As suggested, I've tried fsck using Terminal but with no success.

Is it possible to repair the external drive? Can the fsroot tree be repaired? If so, how?

Many thanks.

It's a long shot but give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Thanks BDAqua. I can back up by using a Spotlight search to access folders and files (I cannot access files using finder, this is part of the problem) and then dragging those folders and files to another disk. It'll take quite some time. And it will be interesting to see if the folders and files from the faulty disk are corrupted in any way.

There is nothing wrong with DriveDX but for several years I had intermittent problems with FAT32 formatted drives . . . when plugged in they appeared to be completely full and nothing could be added to them.

A couple of weeks ago I read an article which mentioned DriveDX could do this if it was switched on, so I switched it off and everything was fine.

You don't need to leave it switched on and it only appeared to affect FAT32 drives.

Thanks again, BDAqua. I did as you advised. When I ran Disk First Aid on the Container Disk, I had to scroll down 3 times to see the full report. I have almost no understanding of what this report means and, as screen shots are not possible in restore mode, I took photographs of the screens. They are attached. Likewise with the Data disk (which I'm guessing is causing the problem) but the report was much smaller. A photograph of that is also attached.

Thanks again, BDAqua. I'll follow your links and report back.

What is really weird is the fact that using Spotlight I can access the offending disk. I can move files from it and - if I've accessed the disk through a Spotlight search and then clicked on its icon in the Path Bar - I can move files onto it. But I can do none of this using Finder. I wonder why? Why can Finder not access this disc but Spotlight can?
