Several sudden shutdowns on new iMac

My new iMac had several sudden shutdowns in the last 30 minutes.
Just normal use, open were mail, safari temp. monitor.
Here is a picture of the log just before crashing.

Hope someone can make out something.

Join me in - i am one of those suffering from "unproper shutdown detected".
Ordered a brandnew mac i7 27", 16 GB of ram, recieved it on 23rd of december.
System worked smooth until 4 o'clock in the afternoon on the day i recieved it.
Imac suddenly shut down. happened three times more the same day. called my dealer. recieved another brandnew imac 27" on december 30. until today the new imac worked properly.
Today my dealer called me and asked if everything is okay. i answered: yes - i am happy. Just 2o minutes later the system crashed once again. In total i had already 4 shutdowns today. Talked to apple Germany. They can't do anything for me because i didn't order the mac directly from apple.
The strange thing is: Even if i don't work on the MAC - it is just running, no sleep or anything (i have got a small network here with win-pc-connection - the Mac shuts down. So there really must be something wrong - may be it is the 16 GB on an imac. I will talk to my dealer ...
By the way: While trying to write this post the system crashed once again. And yes i do also have the code -128.

This is not so strange, because the problem occurs when using 16G ram, whether your iMac is idle(sleeping) or in full operation .
This looks like the same problem I have. With me it happens also during idle time of the iMac.
There are several things you can do.
First: reduce the 16 G ram to 8 or 12 G. What brand of ram did your dealer put into your iMac?

2nd: Change your ram to Samsung ram. If you want to work with 16 G. You have to talk to your dealer about that. Show them the posts on this forum.

This is strange for you have at least one year guarantee from Apple. Except for the ram, if it is not theirs.

3rd: Inform Apple directly via this link, and report all the steps you have taken.

Read the other threads about this problem, this is one:

But there are a lot of other threads about the same problem on this forum.

good luck

Peter, thank you very much for your fast answer.
Clearly, Apple suggested to bring the new Imac to a special
Apple repair service - 60 km away (one way ...).
My dealer even thinks that it could be faulty electronic current
that cuases the shutdown ..
Another thing i'd like to add: The new Imac i7 just replaced
a 1 year old Imac i5. So i just unplugged the power chord of the
"old" Imac i5 and put it in the new Imac i7. The Imac i5 never
had any shutdowns. Well, i did have 8 GB of ram installed on the
i5. In fact i don't know what kind of RAM is built into the i7
but will call the dealer tomorrow morning...

This is what a lot of dealers/Apple Repair Shops and the likes have suggested before to other people.
But it turned out that was not the case. You can read all about it if you read all the concerning threads
but that will take some time.

It is easy to take a look at the ram yourself. Just follow the instructions in the Apple iMac little manual book.(pages 36-42 or there about). At the same time you can reduce the memory for a try out. It does not effect your warrant.

Good morning Peter,
thanks a lot for the advisory. Today i have started my new MAC
at 8 o'clock in the morning and just five minutes later i did have
my first "improper shut down".
I have opened the RAM compartment and looked at my RAM-modules.
I can't find any manufacturer specific detail only the following:
On the RAM-module itself it is written:
4GB DDR3 133 MHz, x8 204pin SO-DIMM,
AP SO1333D34GB, CSX (could be the manufacturer),
CSXO-D3-SO-1333-4GB.
I have 4 modules of 4 GB build in. As you suggested
i took out one of the modules. When clicking on "About my MAC"
it only shows that 8 GB of RAM do exist although i have only removed
removed 4 GBs. I will report if things improve now with
reduced RAM ...

Sincerely
Michael

You should have the banks/slots filled. What I mean is this: upper bank 2 x 4 Gig, lower bank 2x2 G or even 1 x4 G and 1 x 2 G is possible. But never 1 pcs of ram and 1 open. That one piece will not be recognized.

I am not familiar with the CSX brand ram. But the iMacs are very particular of what ram you put into them. So try to get your dealer to change it to Samsung. Look at the OWC website, but do not take their own brand OWC because that is what I have and is giving me shutdown problems with 16 G.

Well probably Compustock ram is not good enough ,when using 16 G, for the iMac.

Hi Peter,
since the "RAM-reduction" the system is stable. Until now, eight hours
have passed meanwhile, no more shutdowns. Yes, i talked to my dealer and
we will do the following: 2 slots with 4 GB RAM and two slots with 2 GB RAM
= a total of 12 GB RAM.
I prefer having a secure system rather than wait for the next shutdown 🙂

I even talked to CSX and they told me that probably some Imacs do have
problems in supplying all the RAMs with constant electronic current when
16 GB are mounted. They even offered to send back my RAM-modules for a
check at CSX. And they also told me i am not the first customer having problems
like this ...

May be i try the Samsung way ...

I'll report as soon as there is something new.
Thanks a lot for your support

Greetings from Germany

Ok,

16 GB are mounted

If this is the cause, than why does it not happen when using 16 G Samsung ram?

Anyhow you can check on your activity screen if you really need all the 16 G. If your used Page-outs and used swap bytes remain 0 and your Page-ins remains low when you are at the most of your working applications like Aperture or Photoshop , 12 G will be enough.

Goodluck,

Peter, i worked with an i5 for over one year. Working with pics in the
GB-range, tons of layers in photoshop-files ... the imac was always lots
faster than my win-pc. the i5 only had 8 GB of RAM and for sure this really
is enough.

I only ordered the 16 GB because ordering a new i7 thinking this could
speed up things even more. But you know the story...

Knock on wood, no more shutdowns for more than 9 hours now ...
With the reduced RAM-configuration.

Greetings
Michael
