To unlock a MacBook Pro account, you'll need to reset your password. If you know your current password, you can unlock the account from the login screen. If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it using your Apple ID or a recovery key, if you have one.

If you know your password:

  1. Go to the login screen and select your user account.
  2. Enter your password.
  3. If you have Touch ID enabled, you can use that to authenticate as well.

If you have forgotten your password:

  1. Restart your MacBook Pro and enter Recovery Mode:
    • For Intel-based Macs, hold down Command (⌘) + R during startup.
    • For Apple silicon Macs, press and hold the power button until you see the startup options screen, then select Options and click Continue.
  1. Open Terminal (in Recovery Mode):
    • Go to Utilities > Terminal.
  1. Enter the command resetpassword and press Enter: This will open the password reset utility.
  2. Follow the prompts to reset your password:
    • You may need to enter your Apple ID credentials or use a recovery key if you enabled FileVault.
    • If prompted, select the user account for which you want to reset the password.
    • Enter your new password and confirm it.

  1. Restart your MacBook Pro: The new password should now be active.

Alternative methods if you see the "Restart and show password reset options" option on the login screen:

  1. Select that option.
  2. Choose to reset your password using your Apple ID.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity and create a new password.
