How to fix a stuck right Shift key that won’t stop glitching on my MacBook Pro?

the right shift key behaves strangely.

I detected the problem over a year ago, but it's only now that I've been able to isolate and reproduce it.

When I press the right shift key, it remains activated/pressed, so input is in uppercase. But some keys deactivate shift (making it unstuck).

These are the / L O 9 ° and right keys

or lower-case

: l o ç )

keys : l o ç are vertically aligned.

I've updated the system, tried to clean up the keyboard, but there's nothing I can do. This is a very strange problem, I can't tell if it's hardware or software...

Has anyone had this before? Is there a solution ? ...

issues w/ keys associated on the diagonal like that typiacally indicate a hardware issue...

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

so,

I've just come back from an approved centre this morning, a diagnosis has been made, it's a hardware problem... Trackpad and keyboard.

They're asking €930 to fix it!

The top case has already been changed twice!

I called Apple Care to express my disappointment (for a 2 year old part).

I'm told there's nothing they can do...

I came to Apple 25 years ago because I thought their equipment was much more reliable, but now I'm thinking of going elsewhere...

I am really sorry you had such a bad experience with your specific unit.

Consumer products, their warranties, and their extended warranties work in a predictable way.

Warrant-able implies, but does not guarantee, High Quality:

Consumer product makers build high quality products. You can tell because the manufacturer is willing to stand by their products and repair or replace them (but only for defects in materials or workmanship) at manufacturers expense for a stated warranty period.

For Apple Macs in most countries, that period is one year. That is the total responsibility Apple or any manufacturer has to you under law. Assumptions about additional responsibility of Apple or any other consumer product-maker's products working longer or maintaining their original failure-free status longer than the warranty period are not accurate. The amount you paid for the product has no bearing on this. The rules are the same for a car costing US$20,000 or more.

Complex Electro-mechanical devices fail at random, arbitrary, and capricious times.

The most frequent reason for most failures is 'just because'.

Your specific failure is most likely caused by an advanced scientific principle called ...

... 'bad luck'.

--------

If you want a really substantial lesson how this this works (or more precisely how this stops working) own an older used automobile.

--------

Consumer Reports Magazine does a large-scale suervey of their readers every year, and asks them (in addition to many other things) about computer reliability and computer-service reliability. Apple constantly out-scores all other computer companies by a wide margin.

You have the ability to turn the tables next time.

Next time you buy a Mac, buy AppleCare PLUS at the same time. Then for the first three years, renewable, if the screen or other major component fails for any reason you pay only the about US$100 technician time, and Apple has to eat the cost of the display or other failed component. A catastrophic failure like "fell down the stairs" costs only US$250 co-pay instead of the about $1000 retail repair cost.

--------

But you have to sign up within 60 days of purchase, and Apple reserves the right to inspect your Mac if not bought at time of purchase. If you could buy AppleCare PLUS any time, only users with failures would buy it, and that would ruin the 'insurance effect'.

there's a big difference with the car (I'm not going to continue with your allegory about the car, because in a car you can change the parts much more easily, you can choose the parts, the way they're assembled, etc.).

My complaint is that after replacing the topcase for the second time, I wasn't actually offered a standard exchange, because this unit turned out to be faulty.

The topcase was changed twice.

The MBPro M1pro dates from November 2021, the topcase was changed for the first time in September 2022, and a second time in May 2023. I'm told it needs changing again. That would make a fourth generation topcase on this unit, with a lifespan of 2 years or less. If you go to your garage or have a window repaired, after 3 changes of the same part, you know there's something wrong!

Again, I am sorry that your unit has been so troublesome. But so many others have been completely trouble-free that it is impossible for your cry of "it's inherently defective" to gain any traction.

Apple repairs ALL come with the same standard warranty on the repair for the EXACT same issue.

That period is 90 days.

If you had no issue for 90 days, it is likely that a different problem appeared in your unit after 90 days of trouble-free operation.
