Likely Causes
1. iCloud Sync + Deletion Propagation Delay
Even though photos remained visible for a while after you deleted them on your old device, iCloud Photo Library syncs across devices — and it sometimes delays deletions for days or even weeks.
It’s possible the deletions from your old phone eventually synced and removed the original photos everywhere, especially if iCloud Photos was still enabled on the old device when you deleted them.
2. iCloud Storage Glitch or Desync Event
- If you ran low on iCloud storage, some photos could have failed to sync properly before deletion.
- Occasionally, photos may become orphaned (disappear) due to metadata corruption or sync errors, especially during device transitions or iOS updates.
3. Optimize Storage Setting
On the new iPhone, if “Optimize iPhone Storage” is on:
- Full-resolution photos live only in iCloud
- If iCloud removes them or they’re lost there, they disappear from your phone too
- If your iPhone wasn’t connected to Wi-Fi for a while, or if iCloud temporarily de-synced, photos might vanish from your local gallery
4. iCloud Photo Library Content Removal
If anyone else has access to your iCloud account (like via shared Apple ID), they could have deleted photos — even unknowingly.
What You Can Try Right Now
1. Check iCloud Storage Usage
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Photos
- Does it show photo count/space that reflects 3 years of photos?
- If it looks like too few photos remain, it may confirm permanent deletion
2. Log in to www.icloud.com > Photos
- Check:
- Recently Deleted
- Hidden
- Albums by Year (scroll back)
- Use Search (e.g. type in month/year or a known person/place)
- Try multiple browsers in case of a rendering glitch
3. Check “Data Recovery” Tools from iCloud
Go to: https://www.icloud.com/settings
Scroll to Advanced > Restore Files or Restore Photos
- This feature allows limited server-side undelete (if data wasn’t fully purged)
- If available, select and restore anything related to Photos
4. Check Other Devices or Backups
- If you had a Mac or another device with Photos synced, open it and see if photos are still cached there
- Do you have any local iTunes or Finder backups (Mac/PC)?
- → You may be able to extract photos using iMazing or similar tools
5. Contact Apple Support (Request a Server-Side Check)
Go to https://getsupport.apple.com → Choose: Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Photos > Data Recovery
Ask for a Senior Advisor and request:
- A check on recent deletions or data corruption flags
- Confirmation of any iCloud data removals, orphaned photo assets, or account-linked actions
Use this wording:
“Some of my iCloud Photos from ~3 years ago have disappeared across all devices and iCloud.com. They were visible after deleting them on one device, but are now gone. They are not in Recently Deleted or Hidden. Can you please check for any metadata loss or deletion events on my iCloud account and help me recover them?”
They can’t view the photos, but they can see logs related to deletion and may be able to recover items from their end if within ~30–40 days.
