MacBook Pro SLOW after upgrading Sequoia 15.5

I updated my MacBook Pro M2 16GB to Sequoia 15.5 two weeks ago, and suddenly, my computer is TOO SLOW now. Before the upgrade, everything was working well, fast, etc. I have 180.96 GB free of 494.38GB. I bought a MacCleaner app to solve the problem, but it is still SLOW. Any suggestions or help are welcome!

Check with the developers of those apps for updates. It is their responsibility to maintain updates if they want to continue support. The Sophos 10.7.2 version for your installed files are quite old and not even sure if Sophos stills recommends having those installed, as they may have just been transferred from a previous OS. Testing after uninstalling an app is the easiest way to identify the problematic app without having to do a complete reset.

I can only tell you what has been seen here to cause problems with slow performance. You are free to do what you wish with the information provided. As a last resort, you can work in the other direction and do a clean install of the OS, then install files one at a time until you find the problem. After you find the app giving you a problem, then you will have to determine how you want to proceed and if it is worth the detrimental effects it has on your computer performance.

There is nothing wrong with the computer or your MacOS that is causing the problem, although there certainly is an issue with an app not working efficiently.

The rule of thumb is to NEVER install:

  • Cleaners (CleanMyMac)
  • Optimizers
  • AntiVirus (Sophos)
  • VPN - Unless needed specifically for your employer. There is no security benefit as they are commonly marketed and are going to slow your Mac down. (FortiClient)

Start by uninstalling those apps. Verify all fragment files have been removed from your system by running EtreCheck again.

The high CPU use of fileproviderd has been seen with Google Drive and OneDrive individually and more common when both are used at the same time. There is nothing inherently wrong using either of those, but sometimes they will need to be reinstalled as a process hangs. If a file overlaps with either of those services, including iCloud syncing, it can lead to a race condition where one file is synced causing it to be "touched" which triggers the other service to sync it in a never ending loop.

There are 4 Categories of Third Party Software / Services that are baffling.

Why some users insist on installing and using the below software.

In no special order

1 - Third Party 2 Way Firewalls

like Lulu and Little Snitch

2 - Commercial VPNs

They may not be what one believes they are doing for the computer and what they actually are doing behind the scenes They may also reduce you Internet Speeds by upwards of 30%

VPN: What you need to know - Apple Community

3 - Third Party Security Software

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that cannot be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

Security. Built right in

Mac app security enhancements

The Built in Security  is all that is required to protect the computer.

Protecting against malware in macOS

4 - Third Party Disk Cleaners / Optimizer

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster.

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a percentage on each sale.

What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

To put the Third Party Disk Cleaner / Optimizer in context and the damages it may have or has already done.

This type of applications can or will Muck Up your User Account ( Home Folder ) of this machine.

It does not touch the Operating System itself unless you consider your User Account ( Home Folder ) as part of the Operating System.

The Operating System is hosed

Updated from a previous version of Sequoia, or upgraded from an older OS?

Cleaner apps do not usually solve problems, and often cause them...

In order to try and determine what may be causing the issue in the first place, we need more information.

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.
