Apple Pencil Pro tool palette challenges, swap gesture ML challenges, highlighter colours, ...
The Apple Pencil is one of my favourite Apple devices and I use it daily.
I believe the tool palette is overdue an update and has significant potential. Here are a few ideas:
- For context, I use the gesture squeeze to show the tool palette and the double tap to swap with the latest used tool.
- The eraser isn't considered a tool when using the 'swap' double tap feature, I think it's worth considering adding that in. It's the easiest way to access to eraser, while at times, swap with a highlighter for example.
- The 'swap' double tap gesture keeps switching to the 'scribble' tool, which I never ever use. It can use some simple ML to recognise this and swap with tools I actually use, like the highlighter instead.
- Even when I use other tools, when I swap, often I still get the 'scribble' tool. It needs a few swaps with other tools for it to be replaced with another tool I actually use.
- It's very challenging to change colours and transparency at the same time. For example, I like to use the highlighter at 50% or so transparency. There's no simple / quick way to use multiple highlighter colours, which is not an unreasonable use case. If you change the colour through the so many clicks required, you need to change the transparency again as well, because it will reset to 100% again.
- The above point also applies to the same tool / different colour approach. It's very hard to do so and requires a lot more clicks than it should.
- I've seen a good implementation where you can add a pen type and a colour into a new tool that shows for you, this way you can put together a few that you use often and use them... being able to customise this pencil kit tool palette would be incredibly helpful.
- The squeeze gesture to show the pencil pro tool palette shows too few tools, only 2.5-3 and it can be much quick if it shows at least the most common 4 tools I use. It requires too many clicks.
Overall, the pencil is an incredible device. The software can catchup and really elevate the experience, starting with reducing the clicks required for some very common actions.
