messenger ipad mini messenger allows typing but no preview… can’t see what I am typng

When I type on the messenger program for my iPad mini I cannot see the text that I am typing. It appears to be underneath the software keyboard. Sometimes when I change the orientation from portrait to landscape and back to landscape, I can sometimes see it then. But for the most part, I am typing blindly and I can hear the keys clicking with feedback. Just no ability to see what I am typing. If you look at the first screen capture there is no indication that I a, typing . However, with a rotation, the words I typed can be seen. Much of what I type, like this posting, submarines below the keyboard when I am typing on my ipad Mini.
