What to do when scanner driver fail to transfer to MacBook Air M4?

I purchased a Macbook Air M4 to replace my Macbook Air M1. I used the Macbook to Macbook transfer process as recommended by Apple. I have a Canon RS40 document scanner that worked extremely well on my M1 but does not work on my M4. Trying to open the app gave error message that said it was corrupted. I deleted that driver/app and downloaded the driver from the Canon website. Opening the app said it was partial download and to delete it. I've tried several times. Canon site suggests that scanner no longer has technical support. Two questions:

  1. why didn't the working version of the driver transfer from M1 to M4?
  2. can I retreive the driver from the M1 to put on the M4 manually?

I'm running macOS 15.5

AI Overview

The Canon imageFORMULA RS40 scanner is compatible with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) and later versions, which includes macOS 15.5 (also known as Sequoia). However, some users have reported issues with the scanner not being recognized after macOS updates.

To ensure compatibility and proper functionality:

  1. 1. Check for macOS Updates:
  2. Ensure your macOS 15.5 is fully updated.
  3. 2. Install the Latest Canon Drivers:
  4. Download and install the latest Canon scanner drivers and software compatible with your macOS version from the Canon support website.
  5. 3. Verify Scanner Connection:
  6. Make sure the scanner is properly connected to your Mac via USB and is powered on.
  7. 4. Reset Printing System (if needed):
  8. In some cases, resetting the Mac's printing system in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners can help resolve recognition issues.
  9. 5. Consider VueScan:
  10. If you continue to experience issues, VueScan is a third-party scanning software that often provides support for scanners when manufacturer drivers are outdated.

I found the answer! A while back I bought some third party software, VueScan from Hamrick Software, to be able to continue scanning on my Canon MG6320 and it worked great. The R40 did not appear to be supported but indeed it is so I am back in business. There was a trick to getting the double-sided scanning to work but when I wrote to Hamrick customer support they quickly replied with the solution. This is no help to the original poster who shouldn't have to buy extra software to make his new purchase work. I love the R40 because it scans super fast and you can grind through a 40 page document quickly with the document feeder. It is super disappointing that Canon doesn't keep up to date with the latest Mac OS's but I still recommend the R40 because it is a powerful tool. I bought mine several years ago and I think I paid way more than $240!

I did what you recommended. And I tried using Chrome to download the driver which worked once then the app would not open. Here's what I get when I open the app after I had downloaded the driver from your link above using Safari. Any ideas now? As I mentioned before, I had no issues using this scanner before I migrated to my new M4 Macbook.
