How to resolve unwanted in-app purchase charges by Apple?

I am constantly being charged for in app purchases that I have not purchased and I do not get. I have been sent between Apple and the developers and it is Apple's responsibility. This has been going on since last year. I am getting no help from Apple.

Again, do you see the charge in your purchase history?

That and the description of the charge you see will determine if it is something that can be resolved by Apple. An In-App Purchase is one that is billed by Apple and will show in your purchase history. Previously Apple was sued and lost for not allowing companies to directly bill a user. Apple also removed apps that did not allow them to manage the purchases themselves and were fined heavily for doing that and were forced to reinstate the apps. That requires you to give the company your payment information yourself to avoid Apple's involvement in the transaction.

You can use the Amazon app and order anything you want and that is not an In-App purchase if you are giving Amazon your payment details. Amazon has your credit card number and billing you directly where Apple is not involved at all. You can do the same from Safari and go to the Amazon website and order things that are also not an In-App purchase. Both scenarios require you to give the company your payment details to avoid Apple from being involved in the transaction.

For any charge that comes from a merchant, you must first attempt a resolution with the merchant and if unsuccessful, then you must dispute the charge with the credit card being billed.

As Mac Jim ID has described, this is the new scam, thanks to the EU forcing Apple to allow side loading. Apple has no control over pricing, or even having all pricing disclosed as they do in the U.S. App Store.

And it's not just the EU. Recent changes to U.S. law also allows vendors to handle their own charging outside of the App Store where you may have no idea what charges may occur after acquiring the app.

Like from this recent topic on these forums:

About a week ago, I took an IQ test through a website called IQBrain. To view my test result, I was asked to pay $1.98 via Apple Pay, and I made that payment.

However, today I was unexpectedly charged $28.80, and I never agreed to any subscription or recurring payment. When I checked my Apple ID subscriptions, there was nothing showing related to IQBrain or any active subscription.

This charge does not appear in my subscription list, and I cannot find a way to cancel or report it directly through my iPhone.

This one was completely outside the App Store, but (apparently) never disclosed there would be a subscription fee. The only way to get out of their hidden subscription is to manually tell them.

And how many users are going to know to look there? The options are in plain view on their lead page, but you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to find the only notice to unsubscribe or request a refund.

Expect this type of undisclosed (or very well hidden) type of charge to multiply as vendors put more of their fees off of the App Store. There will be no unsubscribe option to find on your App Store purchases as they were added directly by the vendor to your credit card.

Thank you, Mac. I misunderstood. These charges are not in my purchase history in the app. I have tried to resolve this with the developer. Yesterday the Apple support person finally explained that I could switch off using Apple to pay for these in app purchases and that I could do it through the actual app.

while I was waiting for them to call me back because the phone line was atrocious, I had decided that I needed to raise this with our consumer ombudsman and my bank as their reasoning for not refunding me was always that it did not comply with apples purchasing policies and procedures.

When they finally called back, they explained how to turn off using Apple to pay for in app purchases.

Thank you for your information.
