Encryption credentials expired on HP 3830 printer with MacBook Pro

My wireless printing was going great. Suddenly got the message "printer is on pause". I woule go into the qje and take it off ause but keep getting the sane message. Then started getting the message"encyption credentials have expired". I can now not get anything to print. Is there a simple solution for an old unskilled user?

HP printer bug, apparently. The printer should self-renew that, and didn’t.

Confirm that the HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One series printer firmware is 001.2223A or later, as available from HP.

Then if current firmware is loaded and if certificate problems persist, reset the HP printer network settings (if that network-specific reset option is available), or reset the HP printer entirely, and reconfigure it.

The embedded web server (“EWS”) is documented in page 94 in the user guide, and that can usually provide a reasonable way to manage the printer, and (usually) to update the printer firmware:

The HP user guide for this printer is weak, organization seemingly rather scattershot, and is also seemingly lacking useful details such as the EWS and firmware updates, too.

HP Support – HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer series

HP Support – HP printers - 'Encryption Credentials Expired' error (macOS, iOS)

HP Support – Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

It sounds like you are using AirPrint – which allows printing to a printer without installing separate drivers. There is some security on the connection (to protect against eavesdropping), and it relies on a certificate provided by HP – one stored in the printer.

Certificates often have expiration dates. The one in your printer did, and it has expired. HP's Help page says that you need to "generate a new self-signed certificate in the EWS from any Windows PC." That is telling us that the printer itself can act as a Web site, and that if you visit that Web site ("visit your printer"), you can tell it to create a new certificate that, according to the Support article, will be good for another 10 years. Then your printer should work until it is time to do this all over again, or until your printer breaks, whichever comes first.

The part I don't like is "from any Windows PC." You might be able to carry out the update procedure using Safari, on your Mac. But there is a possibility that HP has coded the EWS in the printer in such a way that it will only work properly with browsers running on Windows PCs. That would not be very Mac-friendly for a printer that HP claims is compatible with Macs.

By the way, there is a "HP Smart for Desktop" for Macs, by HP, in the App Store. It's a free app that requires macOS 12.0 or later. According to your tag line, you're running macOS 12.7, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Updating your printer from this app might be an alternative to visiting your printer using a Web browser. (See HP's Support page where they describe how to access the EWS both from a browser and from their app.)
