MacOS reinstall didn't find my Mouse & Keyboard

Or my Moose and Squirrel, of that matter.

This isn't an actual problem, but I did want to report it.

I have a 2023 M3 iMac that I bought last year in March. I had the occasion this evening to wipe my hard drive (after backing up) and reinstall MacOS Sequois 15.5.

Apparently, the process for doing that is a bit more involved than I'd been used to with my 10-year-old Intel iMac. In Recovery, I got a real strong warning from Disk Utility about erasing my drive. Made me a little nervous, but I was pretty sure I was proceeding appropriately. Anyway, it restarted one or twice and went back into Recovery, whence I launched MacOS Reinstall.

Now, somewhere along the line, I think right at this point, after restarting yet again my iMac appeared to be looking for my Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless keyboard (these weren't new; they're the same ones that I've been using). And looking. And looking. "Turn it on", it kept on telling me; they are on, I said back, somewhat irritated.

It seemed to take quite a long time, a couple of minutes at least, and maybe it would have kicked in if I'd waited a bit longer, but I decided to dig out my wired mouse and KB, which I keep for just such an eventuality.

When the OS installed, and went through its share of restarts (I really think there were five or six by the time it was all over), it found the Bluetooth mouse and kb immediately. After restoring from backup, everything seems normal; I'm using it right now.

But the apparent reluctance to promptly connect to my mouse & keyboard is of some concern. Had I not had the wired versions available, I'd have been up the proverbial body of water without the necessary means of locomotion. I'd have been somewhat miffed. Perhaps someone connected with OS support might want to look into it.

Thanks for listening,

Jeff

Just a note for the future:

Your OS is installed in a read-only sealed volume.

There is no need to completely erase the drive in order to make a "clean install".

In a recent mac like yours, doing a clean install is much quicker and easier.

1) Full backup (preferably two) 2) System Settings->General->Transfer or Reset->Erase All Content and Settings 3) Migrate your user accounts back if desired 4) Reinstall any applications you want from the App Store or their developers' sites

Much as @ Luis S 👍 has mentioned re " System Settings->General->Transfer or Reset->Erase All Content and Settings "

Technically, using that method does not Touch the Operating System itself and remain intact.

It will only remove everything else including All that is contained in your Home Folder

On Apple Silicon machines, this Erase all Content and Setting seems to have been ported from iOS to macOS

Wherein, on a iOS device doing the same thing does not remove the Operating System

The days of Intel Machines and performing a " Clean Installation " are long gone

As for the Mouse and Keyboard issue

@ steve626 nailed that " Cabled Connection " makes both devices Pair to computer as if brand new devices.

Plus ,during that process, make them act as is they are USB devices
