Messages app keeps crashing after sign-in on new MacBook Pro

Body:

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and I’ve run into a frustrating issue with the Messages app.

Here’s what happens:

  • I open the Messages app, and it prompts me to sign in with my Apple ID.
  • I enter my credentials and sign in.
  • Right after signing in, the app crashes instantly and sends me right back to the sign-in screen.
  • This happens every time I try to sign in—looping crash > sign-in > crash.

So far I’ve tried:

  • Restarting the Mac
  • Checking for software updates
  • Loging out and Loging back in
  • Verifying my Apple ID/iCloud is working in other apps

Has anyone else experienced this or found a fix? Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps to try Safe Mode restart, to see what it does.

And then start again. Once it starts; as a proof test?

A second start would be to test &/or just clear Safe mode.

Instructions offer additional helpful purpose of this test.

There are a few other startup sequences one may try.

(Press and hold Command (⌘)-D to open Apple Diagnostics.)

Find out if you have a Mac with Apple silicon

  1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the power button when you see the startup options screen, which shows your startup disks and a gear icon labeled Options.
  3. From this window you can start up from a different disk, start up in safe mode, use macOS Recovery, and more.
