What are Apple AirTags and their purpose?
Does any one know what they are and do I was told I should get them .

It would probably be better to start with what you think you would want to use these tags for? Depending on that, it would be easier to help you decide, whether or not, they would be useful for you.
Basically Apple designed these tags to help you locate a misplaced item -- like your car keys. They are not designed for tracking, whether that is for pets or people. They rely on two things: Bluetooth and the Apple's crowdsourcing Find My network. The latter literally consists of millions of other iPhones worldwide that can receive the tag's Bluetooth signal and relay that tag's ID, along with the phone's GPS location, to the Apple servers over the Internet. That is where you can get the tag's location updates with the Find My app on your iPad.
