Refurbished M4 MBA Kernel Panic - iBoot Panic, Unexpected SoC (system) watchdog reset

Just bought this MacBook from the online Apple Refurbished store. M4 MBA 24GB/512GB. Encountered several reboots during my limited use. Restarts happen regardless of system load (e.g., during photo editing in Lightroom or watching YouTube video or downloading MacOS update). Restarts do not occur when the computer goes to sleep or wakes up from sleep (some other users reported this). I don't know how to reproduce this issue. I have a hunch that it's more likely to restart when I'm watching a YouTube video on Firefox. Normal videos in 1080p, no HDR content. No USB devices plugged in.

The system restart message is very short, and there is no additional report or diagnostic information: "SOCD report detected: iBoot Panic"

So far, I've tried doing a system reset ("Erase All Content and Settings"), updating to MacOS Sequoia 15.5 (from 15.3), and reinstalling MacOS through Recovery mode.

This is a fresh MacOS account, I did not use Migration Assistant to copy files and settings from my previous MacBook. On this current account I only have a handful of apps installed (Adobe suite, Microsoft, Firefox, messaging apps). No weird mods or apps.

I have a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow, just looking for other ideas in the meantime. Any tips for making this easier to diagnose at the Genius Bar tomorrow would be appreciated. Thanks!

I personally recommend that you return that Mac for a full cash refund forthwith. Buy another one. Don't even think about it. You don't even have to tell them why.

Very frequently, the result of a hands-on inspection by Apple results in "can't find anything wrong, must be you" followed by more crashes once you get it back. Or, they might repair it and in all likelihood it will work flawlessly for years to come. Meanwhile, your fourteen day "no questions asked" return window is closing.

This isn't your problem. Make it Apple's problem.

I second John Galts recommendation.

Your reports suggest you have a very complex issue with the System-on-a-chip and the Genius Bar technicians are generally Not trained to read those panic reports.

NB>>

The one downside of the Apple refurbished store is that you can NOT take the 14-day return/exchange for NEW at the Apple (bricks and mortar) Store.

Your recourse is to notify the refurbished store and return the device to the refurbished store, ONLY.

I see nothing on the Supplied Report ( Thank you for having been Proactive 👍 ) that would account for this issue

Be sure to make a Backup of the drive Before moving over to the Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow.

The may insist on redoing what you have already done " Erase all Contents and Setting " and good work there too

Once that is done and depending on the outcome

They may do additional Testing using their  Special Hardware Software and Expertise to diagnose the issue

Good luck and if time permits

Do keep us all posted on the outcome

Thank you for the prompt response and looking over the diagnostic report. Hopefully their internal diagnostics software will reveal something. I should mention I already tried the Apple Diagnostic tool (Command D) as well, but that didn't reveal anything. As they say, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck... sorta sounds like a hardware issue. Maybe the RAM? Perhaps that's why this laptop, released in March, is already on the refurb store.

In any case, thanks again for the response and have a great day!

You are very welcome

Having purchased Refurb Laptops exclusive from Apple

Generally and in personal experiences

They have been as good as the time they came off the assembly line

Though as were are all humans lol

Something may have snuck through at the other end

Unfortunately for you, you may have one of these at Snuck Through, machines

Fortunately they, Apple Certified Refurbished products, include a one‑year warranty

Again, if time permits

Really & Genuinely interested in the outcomes

Thank you everyone for chipping in, I really appreciate it.

Update: I took it to the Genius Bar and of course, their diagnostics couldn't find anything wrong with my laptop. Still, I opted to return the MacBook. I suppose I'll be keeping an eye out for another refurb device of the same spec to hit the store to try my luck again. I hope Apple properly tests this refurb device before sending it back out, but I can see how this would slip through the cracks.
