How to use spaces & mission control in MacBook Pro?

Hi everyone,

I have searched, read articles, tried some stuff randomly, but I have to confess, it's a total fail.

My config:

  • MacBook Pro 14", SSD 1To, RAM 16GB.
  • Sequoia 15.5

My first concern is the most popular:

How to save our spaces as they are configured to get them back again in the same order, with the same application, the same window arrangement, etc ?

I have tried to add these apps in System Settings/General/Login Items and Extensions in the Open at Login section. I am thinking this is mandatory but could be wrong.

When an app is opened and my spaces as I want them, I select a Desktop and I try to single click on an icon of an App in the dock (maintaining the click) then click on option key and go to the option section in the menu that appears (As recommended by some).

My choices are:

  • Keep in Dock
  • Open at Login
  • Show in Finder

  • All Desktops
  • This Desktops
  • None

As I am totally in the dark, I have tried several combos.

Weird things happened.

I succeeded at getting back one Desktop with 4 terminal windows properly displayed in quarters. Sorry, I was ****** and tired, I didn't take note of the combo used. In that matter, I read a post saying some Mac Utility Apps like Terminal are behaving weirdly with Spaces.

When you move an app from the desktop to another Desktop, this one is moved at the end of the mission control list on top of the screen, does anyone knows why and how to prevent it?

Last question.

For example, I use Arc Browser. In fact, multiple windows on different desktops.

First, to have them on multiple Desktop it is tricky, as far as I understood something.

You need to select a desktop that has the app on it.

You can't do anything if it is in full-screen mode.

Then you have to create a new window (not a new tab). Still don't go full-screen.

Move this new instance to the desired desktop using Mission control or move it to the right or left if it doesn't work (It is one or the other, no choice here, don't know why).

Now you can go full screen. Try to find the proper setup with the option menu from the Dock. But depending on these settings, if you alter one instance of the Arc App in this example, it alters the others on others Desktops. And if you close the penultimate window, it closes the last one at the same time.

This feature could be awesome if I knew how to use it, if it is possible in its current state, obviously.

Voilà !

You can assign an app to a Desktop, and it should open in the Assigned Desktop if set to open at login.

You have to move the App into the Desktop you want, then use the Options in the Dock icon to assign it to “This Desktop.”

There is a setting to automatically arrange by last used, but I’m not if that is what you are seeing. Also, if you put an App into Full Screen, that app becomes a dynamically created Desktop that will go away when you quit the app. I believe it will go to the end. You should be able to drag an app window into any Desktop.

Last question.

You cannot assign document windows to a Desktop, only applications. You can put document windows on any desktop, but they will not be “assigned” to that Desktop.

You need to select a desktop that has the app on it.
You can't do anything if it is in full-screen mode.

No, you can’t. Full Screen is likely the most useless feature. Stage Manager might have stripped that title from Full Screen, but since I don’t use either, I could rate them against each other.

There is no “setting up” of a Full Screen app. When you enter Full Screen the Desktop is created for that one app, nothing else.

But depending on these settings, if you alter one instance of the Arc App

There is only ever one “instance” of an app. An app can have many documents open in different windows, but there is only one app instance.

This feature could be awesome if I knew how to use it, if it is possible in its current state, obviously.

I doubt it will ever work the way you want.

HHey Barney,

Closer and closer to perfection.

Here is the config in System Manager I have.

After a reboot, I just had to reorder the desktops but, I think if we go through them in the desired order before shutting down or rebooting the machine, it should be perfect in the end.

All Apps in their own Desktop, no mess on the Main Desktop.

Multiple browsers is the workaround.

Be sure to tick "Open at Login" & "This Desktop" in the option of all the App's icon in the Dock you want in a specific Desktop.

Great collaboration.

Thanks to the community and to YOU !

Have nice day.

Hi Barney,

Thank you very much for your answer.

I had already been to the Apple Support article you mentioned but, it is not really helpful.

On the contrary, the Desktop & Dock setup you advised me to put in place was indeed a good one.

You are definitely right, full screen mode is useless, not to say worse. As you may have guessed, I like to work full-screen (14") and with one app per desktop, in a specific order, and switch fast enough with the trackpad.

So, there, you gave me the solution to get closer to what I want.

I use all the browser I have in my collection and assign them to the Desktop I want in the order I want.

When, I reboot, few Desktops have their proper App, the rest in the middle of Desktop 1 and I have to re-dispatch Apps to Desktops and re-arrange them.

I hadn't time to try the "Arrange by last used" option, nor the open source stuff I mentioned in my PS.

I will let you know when done.
