Trying to set up son's new phone, he set up a passcode and face ID. Face ID stopped working and he forgot the passcode. Trying to re set by connecting to PC and Apple devices but its not connecting. Any ideas?

They are writing from their account, not likely their sons account. While they may own an iPhone 8, chances are the son does have a new iPhone which does have Face ID.

iTunes is a largely deprecated term.
(Even in the MS Windows environment as-of fairly recently)
