Searching for this adapter on Amazon.co.uk produced UGREEN USB HUB ETHERNET 5-in-1. I checked with UGREEN, who said the adapter worked with my iMac. I bought it, but when it arrived its cable wouldn't fit in the 2 Thunderbolt slots in the back of my iMac.
Indebted for a recommendation for the correct adapter.
iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15
You need a USB-C hub with Ethernet port.

If you can return/exchange that UGREEN USB-A hub and get the USB-C one.
Search Amazon for the same type of dongle, but make sure the connector used for the iMac is USB-C,
not USB-A.
Or find a USB-A to USB-C plug adapter such as in this example:

The USB-C to USB-A adapter should also work, but would limit other connected devices to USB 3.
I suggested returning/exchanging that one for the USB-C one to eliminate the need for an adapter now and in the future.
I agree 100% with @den.thed's suggestion to return the adapter you bought.
Also, I should have included in my previous comment that using a USB-A to USB-C plug adapter may create incompatibility with certain connected devices. These adapters usually work well with mice, keyboards and simple devices, but you might encounter problems with more complex devices such as optical drives and ethernet adapters.

Those are Thunderbolt/USB-C ports on the back of the new iMac’s
