does not restore in DFU mode. the process is interrupted and gives an error

My MacBook Pro 13 worked fine, but could not install the operating system. There was an attempt to clean the disk through the disk utility, after which a black screen appeared. Now I can not restore it through DFU. I see this error in the process The System cannot be restored on this device.

Failed to complete the operation.

Are you using the most recent version of Apple Configurator.....at least version 2.18? I think that v2.18 of Apple Configurator may only be compatible with macOS 15.x Sequoia (perhaps macOS 14.x Sonoma as well according to the App Store specifications....yet it said my macOS 13.x Ventura system was compatible...I do have v2.16 installed though & it won't work any more....Oh Apple....).

Or if you are using the Finder to handle the DFU Firmware Restore, then you must be running macOS 15.x Sequoia.

If you are using a USB only cable and using the correct USB-C port on the "broken" Mac and you are unable to successfully restore the Mac after several attempts using 2.18 of Apple Configurator or macOS 15.x Sequoia, then most likely that computer has a hardware issue of some sort....most likely a bad Logic Board. A USB-C cable that also supports Thunderbolt will not work for this procedure, nor will a charging only cable.

Here is the relevant Apple article for performing a DFU Firmware Restore:

How to revive or restore Mac firmware - Apple Support

FYI, while that article may say older versions of macOS can be used on the host Mac, in reality when using the Finder to perform the DFU Firmware Restore.....only macOS 15.x Sequoia will work. Once macOS 26 Tahoe is release later this year, then only macOS 26 Tahoe can be used on the host Mac when performing DFU Firmware Restores (at least when using the Finder to do it).

Thanks for confirming. Have you tried using the Finder to perform the DFU Firmware Restore instead of Apple Configurator?

Have you tried rebooting the host Mac?

Have you tried using other USB-C ports on the host Mac, preferably on the other side of the laptop just in case the USB-C port is bad (or partially bad)?

And a standard MacBook cable, which came with it.

Just to confirm that this OEM Apple cable has no icons or writing on the USB-C connectors? If there are any icons or writing on the connectors, then it is not a USB only Apple OEM cable.

I gave the MacBook to the service center, they said that the board was alive, they did not find any problems with the hardware. The Mac worked fine all the time, until I decided to install Sequoia.

What were the symptoms after you installed Sequoia?

Was this "service center" an Apple Authorized Service Provider?

Did they examine this computer before or after your upgrade to Sequoia?

At what point did the DFU Restore fail? There are four steps involved. Did the software download successfully and was it pushing the software to the "broken" Mac when it failed? Have you tried it multiple times just to be sure? And did you power down the "broken" Mac & reboot the host Mac....plus put the "broken" Mac back into DFU Mode?

If the host Mac is an M-series Mac, then try booting the host Mac into Safe Mode to see if you can finish the DFU Restore. Perhaps you have some third party software installed which is interfering with the practice. Unfortunately Safe Mode on an Intel Mac may not allow external connections.

If the host Mac is an M-series laptop, then perhaps change the Privacy & Security System Setting for "Allow external devices to connect" to "Always when unlocked", or perhaps temporarily to "Always" if your sleep settings are aggressive. The latter is a security risk if left set to "Always".

If your Mac asks you to allow an accessory to connect - Apple Support

Just curious if you can access the Startup Options screen on the "broken" Mac?

Great find!

And this is a huge problem I have with having a system restoration feature that is so fragile that it cannot be relied upon. After all, even Apple authorized techs would not know this and decide to start replacing expensive parts because this procedure is unknowingly broken. And that it relies on one specific OS...in this case Sequoia.

Thank you

I only came across this when I was checking out the Apple Seed Tahoe and before I went down that rabbit hole on a space M3 MBA

I tried to restore via Finder. But sometimes the device disappeared and was not displayed on the host Mac, but the process went on and stopped at the same place. I created a new user on the Mac. I did not try only through safe mode on the Mac host. I will deal with this. I experimented with wires and ports.

I have such a story - Venture was installed from the moment of purchase. And it seems that I have never updated it. I decided to update, on my second Mac it installed without problems. On the problematic one I could not update the system, the process was going on - downloaded, unzipped, rebooted, but when I turned it on I saw the old OS.

I tried different ways to install OS. But every time after rebooting Mac I saw old OS.

I'll try your advice again. I'll tell you what happened.

I came across a channel with solutions to similar errors.
