How do I customize my iPad battery optimization?

Running one of the latest iPad minis, i am getting really irritated by not being able to override the default battery optimisation system. Sometimes, I am going on a long trip where i won’t be able to access charging power so I want to top up my iPad before leave. The iPad just won’t charge, so I have to leave with a half full battery. THIS IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I am an adult, I know what risks I am taking with the battery when I do what I do. I don’t want the iPad to dictate to me. I should dictate to the iPad.

Thank you. That’s what I thought. A further trawl on the internet yielded the following (AI generated) summary:

Yes, iPads have battery optimization features, though not all are user-configurable like on iPhones. Optimized Battery Charging is always active on iPad, but unlike iPhones, there isn't a user-facing toggle to enable or disable it. Instead, the iPad manages charging to maximize battery health, potentially limiting charging to 80% when connected for extended periods, like in kiosk or POS setups. Additionally, iPads have Low Power Mode, which reduces power consumption during low battery situations.

i think I muddled “optimisation” with “user-control” in my OP. My question was about whether and how to take control of the optimisation - now it is clear that the iPad optimises but, however, with the latest iOS, users cannot stop the iPad from optimising. There is no control.

From what you just posted, the answer is don’t leave the iPad plugged in all the time. When an iPad (or a Mac) is used for long periods of time plugged it it will hold the battery at 80%, because leaving it at 100% when plugged in WILL significantly shorten the life of any Li-Ion battery. That’s why Tesla and other EVs say don’t charge above 80% unless you are planning a long trip where you need the extra energy. But if you use it unplugged most of the time, when you plug it in it will charge to 100%.

Sadly, that is not correct for the iPad Mini 6. There is no “Battery Health” setting. It goes straight from “Battery” to just “Battery Percentage”. Absolutely no ability to make adjustments whatsoever apart from “Brightness”. As someone wrote on another forum, it is a software issue, not hardware - the latest ios takes away our ability to manage our own devices in any way we require.

There has never been much control. With iPadOS 18.x, there is some control. You can set the charging limit.
