iPhone screen dim only on videos

Starting today, whenever I try to take a video, the settings are incredibly dim - so dark that at first I almost thought it was just showing a black screen. This has also applied itself to videos I’ve taken in regular lighting in the past - they are now so dark it’s hard to make out what is happening, even though I’ve watched them in normal colour before. Strangely, this is only occurring with videos - all my photos look totally normal. I’ve tried fiddling with accessibility settings and brightness but nothing has changed. Can I get some help?

Hi.

This sounds like it could be related to the Auto Low Light mode or some HDR/SDR settings affecting video.

A few things to check:

Make sure Night mode or Auto Low Light isn’t enabled in the Camera app settings.

Check if HDR Video is turned on or off in Settings > Camera > Record Video — sometimes HDR can affect brightness depending on playback.

Try toggling Reduce White Point or any other Accessibility settings that might affect screen brightness during video playback (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size).

Also, if you use an external app or have screen dimming apps, try disabling them.

If none of these help, restarting the phone or resetting all settings can sometimes clear strange display issues.
