iPhone 16e Lock Screen timeout setting doesn't seem to work

I am new to iPhone, but slowly becoming acclimated. Apart from the fact that my lock screen sometimes lights simply when I pick up the phone, and sometimes not, when it does light, it does not stay lit for the 5 minutes I've selected. I'd prefer not to select "Never" as the setting, as that would be unnecessary.

Any suggestions, please? Thanks.

iPhone 16e, iOS 18

If you want to turn off Raise to Wake, go to Settings>Display and Brightness>Raise to Wake and turn it off.

Note also that if you enable Low Power Mode, either from the Control Center or from Settings>Battery, it will temporarily change your time out to 30 seconds.

Hi.

Totally get the confusion iOS separates the screen timeout settings.

The Auto-Lock timer (in Display & Brightness) only applies after the phone is unlocked. But when you're just on the lock screen, that timeout is shorter and not something we can manually change. So your setting is working right it's just that the lock screen behaves a bit differently.

Hope that clears it up!

There is a setting that will wake the phone when you pick it up. Many people disable that setting since it can lead to the iPhone waking off and on when in someone's pocket. When you pick it up if you do not look at it, it will not unlock. And like the other poster stated, unless it unlocked, the auto-lock feature does not go into affect. It just wakes the phone long enough for you to look at it for Face ID to open it.

If you haven't already, you may want to check out some of the resources on this page:

The link to the user guide is near the bottom. Apple does a nice job writing user guides that are understandable. Also, if you use an internet search engine to look for help, consider limiting the search to Apple. You do that by structuring the query this way (as an example):

site:apple.com display iphone

That will help cut down on the dross. Be wary of using ChatGPT or similar. While they can often give you useful information, very frequently, they don't. They're not good at separating out old information that may not be relevant anymore. And they hallucinate. And a lot of what they are trained on is nonsense.

Thank you. Yes, I am all too familiar with the drawbacks of trusting ANY search results that aren't from Apple. On the other hand (as an Apple customer/Mac user since 1989), I am flabbergasted that I am not able to easily find how to enable dark mode on Apple website pages to make reading the iPhone user guide bearable (I am autistic with extreme light sensitivity). But thanks again.

It depends on the website. Some will allow you to make changes, some will not. It's all up to the designers. Apple, for whatever reasons, has chosen not to make that an option.

You could always go to Settings>Accessibility>Display and turn on Invert Colors and see if you like that. I'm sure it would be possible to create a shortcut that would allow you to turn that on and off easily.

By the way, Shortcuts are a way to create some options for yourself.

Thanks again!

I have trouble with them as well. I discovered, though, that frequently other people have done the work and there are ones already written out there.

ETA: The internet says that control-option-command-8 should also toggle it. You may need to to to Settings>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Accessibility and enable it.

It works on the Apple site.
