Using an Apple USB SuperDrive with a Windows 11 PC is actually easier than it seems, but there are a couple of gotchas that trip people up. Apple originally designed this drive to work only with Macs, so it doesn't always play nice right out of the box with Windows.

Here's your non-techie guide:

  1. Plug the Apple SuperDrive directly into your PC: No USB hubs or adapters — it must be plugged directly into one of your computer's USB-A ports. The SuperDrive draws more power than most USB devices, and hubs often don't provide enough juice.
  2. Wait for Windows to recognize it: After plugging it in, Windows might seem like it’s doing nothing. Give it a minute or two. If drivers are needed, Windows 11 will usually install them automatically.
  3. Open File Explorer and check “This PC”: After a few moments, you should see a new CD/DVD drive listed under “This PC.” If there's already a disc in the drive, it may auto-play or prompt you.
  4. Insert a CD or DVD: The SuperDrive has no eject button — you insert a disc by pushing it gently into the slot. It will pull it in automatically. To eject, right-click the drive in File Explorer and choose “Eject.”

Hopefully, that will work. However, should it not, here are a few things you can try:

  • Try a different USB port.
  • If you’re on a laptop with only USB-C ports, you need a USB-C to USB-A adapter that supports full power/data, not a cheap charging-only dongle.
  • Restart your computer with the drive already plugged in.
  • Finally, if required, you may need to manually enable it in Device Manager under "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Right-click and choose “Enable,” if it’s there but grayed out.

Noter: The SuperDrive doesn’t work with Blu-rays, and if you're watching commercial DVDs, you might need playback software that supports encrypted discs.
