I have old sony trv25 need help with proper cables to transfer to new iMac/Users/jamesbechdel/Desktop/TRV25.jpg

Here are the suggested cables to transfer video to new iMac

Firewire 4-pin to 9-pin cable: You'll need a cable that connects your camcorder's 4-pin Firewire port to the 9-pin Firewire 800 standard. You may be able to find a Firewire 4-pin to Firewire 800 cable.

  • Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 adapter: You'll need an adapter that converts Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2.

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter: You'll need this to connect the Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 adapter to your iMac's Thunderbolt/USB-C port.

  • Connect the Firewire 4-pin to 9-pin cable to your TRV25's Firewire port.

  • Connect the other end of the Firewire cable to the Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 adapter.

The Sony DCR-25 is a MiniDV camcorder.

Normally, on those, you cannot use USB to transfer full-quality video. The USB ports are only for transferring still photos, and sometimes for transferring small, low-quality videos that were not recorded in the regular DV format.

[EDIT: After skimming the manual, it appears that this particular camcorder might be an exception to this rule.]

The OP's [other] choices are to

  • To import digital video over FireWire – hard to do these days due to Apple discontinuing the Firewire adapter.
  • To import analog video over S-Video or composite video, using a USB video capture device and software (such as the El Gato device). (Depending on how one makes an analog connection, this might require use of a special cable that probably came with the camcorder, to go from that compact Audio/Video jack to regular RCA plugs or jacks.)

The second choice will force a conversion from digital format (DV) to analog format in the camcorder, and another conversion from analog format to digital format in the capture device. )But at least you can still get the hardware.)
