Mail app repeatedly downloads all mail at login - total mess

Forever my mail app opens on my mac airbook (2022) and then starts downloading some 68k emails one by one. I have not rebuilt my mail box (as far as im aware) i login regularly (few times a week) and it's always the same. How can i fix this - its blowing up my machine and my data.
