My iMac 2020 intel i5 6-core 8gb ram opens applications very slowly

My iMac 2020 intel i5 6-core 8gb ram opens applications very slowly. After the two recent updates and installation of parallels desktop to run windows, the problem became worse. My computer is runs MacOs Sequoia 15.5.

8GB RAM is the bare minimum to run modern versions of macOS on an intel based Mac. Parallels is going to suck up a huge chunk of that when it's running, making things that much worse.

You can upgrade the RAM, but I'm not sure I'd put the money into that machine. Your money would be better spent toward a new Apple Silicone based Mac. The caveat is they won't run Windows at all unless you want to run Microsoft's "tech preview" of Windows for ARM in VM Ware fusion or another virtualization platform.
