AirPods "Press and Hold" function not activating Siri, but Noise Cancellation settings instead (Voice Control involved?)

I purchased a pair of AirPods Pro 2s about 6 months ago, and have been in general very satisfied with them.

But there is one problem that is making me crazy.

When my AirPods connect to my MacBook Air (M3) the setting to use "Press and Hold" for Siri doesn't work.

Regardless of which ear I use, all I get is noise cancellation. I've removed and re-added the AirPods to my Mac twice now and the result is the same.

The only thing that appears to correlate is that I began to use voice control a while ago. If I turn off voice control, it appears that Siri will function normally when I press and hold on the AirPod set up to access Siri.

Has anyone else seen this?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.5
