Unauthorised pop-up 'Scanning Device' on iPhone

I just noticed an app or pop-up message on my iPhone indicated 'Scanning Device.' It's a bit concerning. Has anyone else experienced this?

It's a scam, presented by some Web site or app. Web sites and apps can't actually scan your phone (although an app that has been given permission to access things like photos, contacts, or you location can certainly abuse the access it has been given).

What it is probably trying to do is to

  • Get you to pay for some worthless "security" app to solve a non-existent "problem", or
  • Directly contact criminals posing as "tech support" so they can rip you off directly

If you can figure out which Web site or app is presenting it, you may want to avoid visiting that Web site or using that app in the future.

"Scanning Device" Message:

Indeed, this seems a bit suspicious. It may come down to a Factory Reset. But, before performing that, perform he following...

A. Provide a Screenshot:

Take a screenshot of your iPhone's screen, when you see this message. IMPORTANT: Block out personal info (i.e. names and time) by covering it with red-colored rectangles and such through use of the Photos app. Go here: Take a Screenshot on iPhone - Apple Support

B. Uninstall Security Software:

Do you have any Security Software installed? If so, it may be performing these scans, based on the date and time set. So, remove this Security Software from your iPhone.
