Is the Virgin Mobile truly unlimited?

Looks like Virgin Mobile just started a data only $40 a month plan:

Has anyone tried to push its limit to see if they get charged anything extra? Are there any caveats besides coverage of the 3G access?

Virgin Modile had an ad in the Washington Post Express this morning (given out free on the Metro)and thought of this thread while reading the ad...in the fine print (very very fine print) it says:

"Unlimited does not mean unreasonable"

What ever that caveat means 🙂

Guess it is up to Virgin Mobile to determine if your usage is unreasonable.

For those of us that live in Maryland, aka almost heaven...abundant steamed crabs, etc...why would we want to move anywhere else?

Anyway, what is the story with the GPS chips...there have been several threads about location or mislocation...is there a problem with the chips, the algorithm, or the system that auctioneers between the possible locations? Don't have a 3G unit so the question is more curiosity.

If you have a GPS problem you should start a new thread. This thread is about Virgin Mobile and unlimited access.

I started this thread, and will allow this threadjack, since it concerns the discoveries of the what limitations we might run into with Virgin Mobile. I might not have a chance to check till next week, but the iPad I have which is on Virgin Mobile is able to gather GPS correctly off my home Airport Extreme. We'll try off the MiFi when we get a chance and see if the reset helps there.

Now that that is cleared up...I am still curious as to the origin of the issue people are raising about GPS and location determination. It is not a problem with dedicated GPS units, so why the problem with the iPad? And this is NOT an iPad bash by any means. A technical question...is the problem coming about from the MiFi as Barbara suggests, or is the real culprit the auctioneering? I am not a fan of auctioneering systems at this level, that is for technical fail-safe reasons.

But maybe this is going outside of the realm of these discussions so may be I should stop now and say thanks for listening.

There is no GPS problem and MiFi is completely separate from GPS. GPS has its own antennae and receives its signal from GPS satellites, not MiFi, Wifi, Cell, or any other means. IPad and dedicated GPS units use the same signal from the same satellites. The only time MiFi, WiFi, or Cell triangulation comes into play are when these locators assist GPS in determining initial position. They also assist when the GPS satellite signal is lost because of buildings, trees, etc.

A WiFi, 3G, or, MiFi connection is required if you are using an online rather than a local map.
