Is a screen protector safe for my MacBook Pro?

so I have this 2017 MacBook Pro, the antiglare layer is lowkey messed up. I asked chat gpt if a matte screen protector is good to hide the marks, and they said yes, but I want to double check that its okay to put a screen protector.
