Spotlight (Command + Space) has stopped working with Sequora 15.6 update.

I use spotlight for nearly everything I do on mac. After the update, spotlight is no longer working as intended. It will not search installed apps, or even core systems like "system settings". It no longer pulls up predictive options or allows you to hit "enter" to open the selected item.. Nearly all queries are simply using "Google Chrome results"...

Safemode did not initially rectify the issue. Spotlight was still unable to locate or suggest the apps or functions I was looking for. I restarted my Macbook Pro once again and booted normally.

Edit - After a few minutes, Spotlight began to display an "indexing" status bar.. eventually it was able to bring up application suggestion such as "System Settings", App Store", "Calculator", and "Mail", etc.

It is now functioning properly. This indeed is a strange occurrence; but it does seem to be working now. I am curious what the cause was, but I presume it was something related to the update since this only started happening after I updated to Sequoia 15.6.

The safemode boot, then normal restart seemed to fix the issue; but only after a few minutes (and failed queries later).

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
