Your Apple Account is the account you use to access Apple services like the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and more. It includes the email address and password you use to sign in as well as the contact, payment, and security details you use across Apple services.

Even though you don't need the info:

You can create or have an Apple Account without a payment method, however to use the account for free updates and free app downloads, Apple has a requirement.

If this is the first time you will use the App Store: Apple will require a payment method is listed in your Apple Account for that first time you use the app store or itunes, even if you only download free items.

(NB: Free items are listed with a "Get" button instead of price).
