cannot connect xbox series x|s controller to iphone using wired connection

I have an iPhone 12 mini with iOS 18.5. I have an Xbox series x|s controller with the latest firmware update. I am trying to connect the controller to the phone using a lightning-USB c cable, but the controller will not connect. Apparently it should be a plug and play experience, so I’m not sure what else to try. I have rebooted the phone but to no avail.
