MacBook Pro 2018 — can it enable HDR when connected to an external display at 4K？

When my MacBook Pro 2018 13-inch (A1989) is connected to a TV, there is no “High Dynamic Range” option in System Settings > Displays. However, using the same cable and port with my M4 MacBook Air, I can enable High Dynamic Range.

According to Apple’s guidelines, MacBook Pro models released in 2018 or later support HDR video playback on compatible HDR10 external displays.

So, why can’t I turn on HDR? Could it be related to using 4K resolution with the external display?

You have an Intel MBP, so yes 4K is the issue.

“HDR content might play at resolutions no greater than 1080p on Intel-based Mac mini, Intel-based MacBook Pro, and Intel-based MacBook Air models, depending on the HDR content and the display on which it is viewed.”
