Safari browser changes 2025 unable to change back to before

August 2025 iPhone update changed the way I am able to use safari browser. When I type words into the search bar I am forced to use a search engine. I understand the search engine I use can be changed to my preference. But my preference is use the safari browser search suggestions I I had been using it for years. Apple has explained that getting rid of the search engine by choosing none is not an option. Is there any way I can go back to using the safari search suggestions like I did before this update in August 2025. If I want a search engine I will use one but what I want is safari browser suggestions. Does anyone know how to make safari default to browser suggestions instead of a search engine?

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 18

You are not correct. You always had to have a Search Engine selected and there was never an option to have none. By default the Search Engine chosen is Google. The Safari Search Suggestions are just what was found in your browsing history or the result of a previous search from one of the Search Engines. There was never an option for Safari/Apple search results as they do not have a search engine. The only searching going on is from your website history or the suggestions provided by your selected search engine. If you recently cleared your Web History, then you may not see all those suggestions.

I did not explain my question clearly then because it has definitely changed. Before, I would open safari and enter whatever I chose, a word or a subject. The results that would next be on the screen were safari browser suggestions of websites. Actually most recently the very first thing I would see was an AI generated short definition or explanation and then there would be many suggestions of websites to follow. Sometimes images would be suggested. I could choose “all” “images” “news” “shopping” but I would get several pages of suggestions.

now when I open safari and enter whatever, a word or phrase, Google search engine results or bing search engine results are generated. In settings I am able to choose which search engine I want to use.

before this update I did not have to choose a search engine. I was happy with safari suggestions. Occasionally I would open safari and enter the name of a search engine and safari would suggest many options that were basically the same but I would choose one of the suggestions and it would then direct me to the search engine I wanted.

now Apple has forced me to choose a search engine . No more safari browser suggestions.

Apple/Safari has NEVER had a search engine of its own. For years the default search engine for Safari has been Google. So you were using Google’s search engine all this time without knowing it. End of story.I f you are now being asked to select a search engine you may be located in a country whose govern ment has mandated users be offered a selection. Where are you in the world?

And might I ask why you chose the username Applehater2025? If you hate Apple then why are you using Apple’s hardware and software? Please explain if you can.
