AirPods 6F21 pausing uncontrollably

I’ve had my AirPods for a year. A few months ago the left one started pausing erratically and uncontrollably on its own (I can hear the clicking). Sometimes it pauses a song, sometimes it skips ahead, sometimes it replays from the beginning, but most often it opens Siri. I can barely use my phone with the AirPods connected because it keeps clicking rapidly opening Siri on its own.

I have tried cleaning the AirPods, disabling automatic ear detection, and well as selecting “forget device” under settings and re-pairing them. Nothing works.
