How can I recover my MacBook Pro and its data after water damage?

my water bottle fell onto my mac while it was running and I was asleep. I woke up and now it wont turn on. Opened it up and saw a burnt component. Can my mac still recover? If not, can I still recover my data?

You will most likely need a logic board replacement.

you will need to recover your data from your back up (Time Machine or other). The SSDs are soldered to the logic board, and if that is non-functional, there is no way to access the data. None.

If you don’t have a back up, you’ve learned a valuable lesson, but unfortunately, had to learn it the hard way.

Once you have a functional computer again, get an external drive (better yet, more than one) and start using Time Machine or another strategy to back up your Mac. 3-2-1 is a good strategy – 3 copies of your data, 2 of which are backups and one of which is stored offsite.

Unlikely since the 2018+ Macs require them to be nearly fully functional to access the data since you need access to the USB-C ports and all supporting circuitry for them & the internal SSD which also means the security enclave chip & its circuitry.

FYI, you have more liquid damage all along that whole side from the burnt components back to the back edge by the Display Assembly. The USB-C ports & connectors have liquid residue there.

Having Apple repair the laptop won't get your data back because Apple will be replacing that Logic Board which has the SSD soldered to it (the SSD contains your hardware encrypted data). Even an expensive professional data recovery service will need to attempt repairs to this Logic Board in order to access the data due to the data being hardware encrypted. Unfortunately many components on the Apple Logic Boards are not available to anyone outside of Apple.

People should always have frequent and regular backups of their computer and all external media (including the cloud) which contains important & unique data. There are a lot more new ways to permanently lose access to the data stored on the internal SSD of the recent Macs. Unfortunately many people must learn this lesson the hard & painful way.
