How to prevent on-screen keyboard from appearing on iPad mini while connecting external keyboard?

I’ve checked accessibility settings and everything else I can find to try, but the onscreen keyboard keeps popping up while I’m in the middle of typing with my Bluetooth connected keyboard. I can’t find a setting to stop it.

How do I disable the on screen keyboard so it stops interfering with my connected keyboard?
