I have received a donation of ipads for my classroom from a school that closed. The devices require the previous school's apple id to sign on. How can I work around this to link the devices to a new apple id?

You don't "work around" it. You contact the school that donated them to you. Only the owner of the account used to lock them can remove the lock.
