Apple mail is downloading my entire Gmail mail for the second time this week.

For the second time this week, Apple mail is downloading my gmail inbox. WHY? What can I do to stop this, as it affects the response time on my Internet activity. I set the 'get new mail' to manual, but that hasn't helped. What is wrong with Apple Mail?

Because Google's implementation of IMAP is horribly non-standard.

It seriously messes with most mail clients.

I've gone so far as to turn on the IMAP folder visibility for the all mail folder entirely. You can find the settings for that on the gmail website in the settings.
