Problem mounting Seagate Basic disk on MacOS Sequoia

Since I updated my MacBook Pro to Sequoia, I can no longer mount my Seagate Basic hard drive. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and is there a solution?

I'm using NTFS for Mac and Disk Utility, but nothing works. When I try to mount my hard drive, it doesn't work.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 15.6

I'm going to try connecting it to a friend's Mac that hasn't been updated to Sequoia to see if it's an OS version issue.
I only use NTFS to mount the drive, that's all.

Your problem is the NTFS software. It isn’t compatible with Sequoia. All of the bundled NTFS software is garbage that breaks at every upgrade and some updates. If you don’t need to use it on Windows, erase it and format for use on a Mac. If you do need Windows compatibility, use ExFAT.

Although it is possible there is a hardware problem with the external drive or its cable, more likely is your NTFS driver or extension is not compatible with the version of Sequoia that you updated to. This is common; see if the NTFS driver has a later version that you can update to that the vendor says is compatible with Sequoia.

I also have to second den.thed's query -- why are you using NTFS? There are better ways to get PC compatibility that won't require worrying about the driver getting out of date every time that you update the MacOS.

Buy quickly a SSD drive with enough space and use /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. There choose Disk Utility.app > View > Show All Devices and select the topmost device (not volumes under it) and Erase as GUID partition scheme and APFS (case insensitive) format.

Then copy the old NTFS disk's contents to the new drive. The Mac should read it if you uninstall any incompatible 3rd party NTFS utilities.

...or update the 3rd party NTFS utility so it is again supported on your macOS.

p.s. whatever you do, remember to backup the external drive to another drive because all drives eventually fail.

How old is that external Seagate drive..?

Inexpensive external drives have a pretty high failure rate.

Does it work connected to a different Mac or PC..?

If not, then it sounds like a bad USB cable or the external drive has failed.

Why are you using NTFS for Mac..?

That external drive original came pre-formatted exFAT which is compatible with both Mac's and PC's.

Those Seagate drives depending on the model, only have a 1 or 2 year limited warranty.

If that doesn't work, then the cable is bad or drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

I only use NTFS to mount the drive, that's all.

Using NTFS software is not necessary, unless the external drive was adulterated (formatted) by a windows PC.

macOS should automatically mount FAT-32, exFAT and Mac formatted external drives, without the use of third-party NTFS software.

The misbehaving drive has not be accessible for 10 days.

How has the user been able to survive without the drive ?

If the drive has failed outright “ all my work on my drive “ is gone, full stop.

Except if you what to spend money for a Professional Mac-Centric  Data Recovery Company to try to recover “ all my work “

Even then, they would tell you up front

This would ba a Best Effort to recover some, not all data
