Favicons don't match in Safari

I have a Mac Mini M1, using Safari version 18.6 and macOS Sequoia 15.6.1. I have several favorites in the left pane under Bookmarks, and also on my Start Page.

All the websites in the left pane have the correct favicon. However, several favicons on Safari's Start Page do not match the favicons in the left pane. They either have an incorrect favicon, or just a gray box with the first capital letter in the name underneath the favicon.

How do I get the favicons on the Safari Start Page to match those in the left pane?

You could try to empty the Safari caches. In the Develop menu, click Empty Caches. If you don't see the Develop menu, click Safari > Settings, select the Advanced tab and check "Show features for web development."

The cache will rebuild itself automatically. If not, you may have to visit the websites not having the right icon.

If the Favicons are still not correct, remove all your favorites and add them back one by one.

I added Amazon to my Favorites and I see the same as you: The icon in Bookmarks is correct, the one in Start Page is just an uppercase "A" on a gray background. (On my iPhone it shows with an orange background.)

Digging into the databases supporting the icons (in ~/Library/Safari/Touch Icons Cache), I see that all my icons in Start Page not having a proper image are tagged with what I think is the the HTTP 404 error code. This would mean that Safari is not getting a proper response from the website to fetch the icon.

Seeing that both you and I have the same issue, I suspect that either Safari is trying to fetch the icon at the wrong web address or that the website provides an incorrect address for the icon.

Please don't hesitate to report this issue to Apple: Product Feedback - Apple.

Thanks for the suggestion, 6x6, but it only worked for some of the favicons. Amazon is an example. I deleted the icon on the Start Page in Safari, then I went to the Amazon site and re-added the favorite. In the left pane, after re-adding the Amazon favorite, it shows the correct Amazon favicon: a small "a" on a white background with an orange curved arrow under the "a". On the Start Page, it shows just a capital "A" in a box.

Any other ideas on how to get the correct Amazon favicon on the Safari Start Page?
