I checked in an Apple store today and 16e is not eligible for trade in against 17 series and that will be the situation until apple discontinue that model 😔. I could try selling it elsewhere and use funds towards it. Gonna have a think about what to do, whether to wait or sell 16e elsewhere
Hello~ Apple does not accept trades on newer iPhones. If it’s not on their trade in list then that’s the case. The iPhone 16e was released in February of 2025. You could sell it privately and apply those funds towards your choice in the iPhone 17 lineup.

My situation is similar to yours blueberryimac. I have a 16e, which I want to trade in against cost of apple air. Looks like other 16 phones are on apple’s list of eligible trade-in models. When I was in an Apple Store a week before 17 phones were released, I asked and was told I would be able to trade-in my 16e. Internet searches suggest trade-in value would be same as standard 16, subject to condition, but I can’t confirm that until I go back to the Apple Store. If it would help, I can post an update after I’ve made enquiries in an Apple Store

You say "Apple does not accept trades on newer iPhones". That is very unspecific. How 'new' is 'newer'?
It is offering trades on other iPhone 16 models, so it obviously accepts trades on models that are a year old.
But is there any confirmation from Apple of how long a product has to be available before it will accept trades?
Katana-San is quite correct.
It means Phones where a newer version is not yet available. There is no 17e. Wait til the spring.
Normal iPhone 16 can be traded in because there is an iphone 17

They are being very specific about the iPhone 16e by leaving it off the list.
Also the iPhone Air, because it does not carry the 17 identifier, may not be tradable next year, could be 2 or more years
