Downloaded Tahoe successfully. No issues or problems that I've detected so far. First back up on Le Cie Portable HD (Plenty of available space) overnight, did not complete. Seems to have completed this morning, now running additional back up, it's at 36% after about 4 hours. Why is it taking so long?

you are kidding me right(?) it should reformat within seconds not hours.
I would say your Disk is working in a state of failure. I would replace it.

Have tried everything. Reformatted many times, done first aid, no problems reported. In thinking about it, actually I encountered problems with this disk BEFORE installing Tahoe so it's just possible that this disk is corrupt even though First Aid is not reporting any problems. I must get another disk and try and see what happens?

How are you connected to the external...(?)
Try a different port—
NOT the DFU port and compare your results:

Have you tried running Disk Utility > First Aid on the LaCie drive?
Have you tried stopping the backup (click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar > Skip this backup) then restarting it?
FWIW, TM backups are working fine for me to both my NAS and a Samsung T7 SSD.
Yes, multiple times. bought 2 new WD 5tb drives. Formatted by applestore. Still the same problem. it seems it's not overwriting old backups and when you click on disk they are not there? If you go to disk utility, shows disc is full. Rase then first aid (no faults) and start the whole process over again.....
