iMessage and FaceTime login issues across multiple Apple devices

Where is the common thread that links my Mac mini, iMac, iPad, and iPhone? I updated my iPad to iOS26 last night. However, I began having issues on my iMac "before" I updated the iPad.

I tried resetting my password. I'm currently updating my iPhone to see if that helps.

Mac mini : 15.6.1 (24G90)

iMac: 13.7.8 (22H730)

iPad: 26.0 (23A341)

iPhone: "updating" as of 10:24AM (EASTERN)

MacBook Pro: 13.7.8 (22H730)

All of these start to login and then recycle the prompt.

I believe Messages simply refers to the application itself and iMessage refers to one of 3 ways of sending that message. What is the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS? - Apple Support

If you have reset your password it helps to restart all your hardware so they take a fresh look at configuration and security related items.

If the article does not help you, you may wish to contact Apple about this. There could be a server issue. I personally find Facetime and Messages very temperamental and usually restarting has helped me clear up an issue.

Refer to this page for Apple Support features ➔ Contact - Official Apple Support

Select from the presented options until you find a solution for your issue, or see if there is a chat or phone call contact method offered lower on the page (you sometimes have to narrow down the options multiple times before this is shown). If you do not see your issue, keep experimenting with any series of selections until you reach one that offers a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

This support article has various country telephone numbers for contacting Apple for support and service ➔ Contact Apple Support - Apple Support For some countries look under “Other” listing at the end of each region. Not every country has telephone support.

This IS the solution...and your iPhone is the key. The section about disabling Messages and FaceTime...restarting your iPhone...and then restarting the apps (and signing in) was the solution to this problem.

Thank you, Limnos, for the solution. I went back and carefully read and executed each step of your link. This proved to be the key to unlocking Message and FaceTime sharing across all of my affected devices.

I've tried both a phone # as well as multiple email addresses associated with my Messages/FaceTime apps.

It simply repeats the login/activate prompt ad nauseam on every device I have (listed in original post).

On this machine, Mac mini (2024, M4 Pro), when I log into Messages...it logs in for about 5 seconds and then exits abruptly returning to the login screen. I have just enough time to click on one of my pinned contacts before the exit.

On my iPad, I can see all of my current conversations behind the login prompt but the lather/rinse/repeat cycle exits as it does on the other devices.

Now...for clarification. As "Messages" is working on my iPhone (13, Pro Max, iOS 18.7), I have NOT made any attempts to logout or change anything in fear of losing my last vestige of contact. I hope that makes sense. My phone identifies the app as "Messages" not "iMessage". Why the difference? And why does "Messages" continue to work even after the iPhone's OS was upgraded today and the phone rebooted? Again, please notice the difference in app names.

Thanks for any help.

Here are the devices I'm currently working with...

Mac mini: 15.6.1 (24G90)

iMac: 13.7.8 (22H730)

iPad: 26.0 (23A341)

iPhone: iOS 18.7 (22H20)

MacBook Pro: 13.7.8 (22H730)

If you desire more information about/from any of these, I'm more than happy to provide it (syslog, etc).

Hi have the same issue on my iPad. Everything works normally on my iPhone (14 pro). Both devices have been working until yesterday. Today I tried to change password for iCloud login and updated both iPhone and iPad to most recent update (18.7). I also shutdown/restarted, no help. iPhone still works normally but I get the login page for both iMessage and FaceTime which both fail, so I cannot turn them off and reload. I even tried logging out of iCloud completely on iPad and then logging back in. Still no help. Also no way to contact apple because they want to “chat” which requires login to iMessage which is the problem. I’ve gone through the articles on apple support site, but they all said the same steps and I’ve tried them all. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've been going thru the same hot mess! All day Thursday, I was banned off and on due to my account being blocked by Apple. I couldn't update passwords, Apple ID, etc. Apple told me it would take until Friday afternoon to get the ban lifted. Friday morning, like magic, it was lifted, and I could get some work done. Then last night I couldn't log into TV (I only have streaming) and it said I wasn't online, even though I had been earlier in the day. It also would not let me follow the normal steps Apple provided.

I had logged into all my Apple devices (7 total) on Friday with a new password and Apple ID. After an hour of triple-checking everything, I realized I was using my older iPad and even though I had logged it in the day before, it was creating the problem. What a frustrating, blood pressure-raising mess!

Earlier, it took three tries to upload photos from my phone to my Mac, even though all should have been good. Passwords were ok, but I had to reboot everything. I'm not sure what to do at this stage? Is there a sequence of double checks we should do before this passes? When everything flows like it is supposed to it is wonderful...when it doesn't flow, it's my own personal Armageddon! Thanks in advance for any tips!
