macOS 26 installation freezes on Intel-based MacBook Pro

Tried last night to install Tahoe on the Intel Based 16" MacBook Pro and by the looks of it device is bricked.

Installation just freezes. After I can see the message stating something like "19 minutes left" laptop reboots few times and during one of the reboots it produces the sound similar to one that it makes when laptop gets connected to the power supply and that's the end of it. Fans are running like mad, laptop does not respond to keyboard or touchpad. Screen eventually gets dark.

I tried to restart it and it boots but when I log in it does exactly the same thing during login, i.e. that sound and gets non-responsive.

Tried to all kinds of woodoo, such as resetting SMC and NVRAM without luck.

Also, tried to load it in the safe mode but it still fails to load but instead of freezing with the beep laptop screen gets black.

Tried to apply first aid to the disk and tried re-installation few times but getting the same result.

Any ideas if it is possible to get out of this mess?

Did you try the install from a Safeboot...? it will side step many issue.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support third party system modifications are disabled temporarily.

if you have the full installer downloaded it will be sitting in the Applications folder "Install macOS Tahoe.app"

You launch it like any other application when you are ready in SafeBoot.

To be clear— I run a Intel 2019 MBP 16" and there were zero issue upgrading, before , during, after —

I find disparaging generalized statements are counter productive for resolving issue.

macOS Tahoe

I had same problem and got online with Apple support chat. I also have intel MacBook Pro. They said Tahoe would run on Intel MacBook Pro however I don’t think so. A bug must be in software update. I had Apple support tell me I didn’t have enough room on hard drive.

Anyways I had to make appointment with in person at Apple Store. I was there for an hour and a half. They tried to reinstall hard wired Into the internet. Which seemed to be a faster but at the end of the day same issue Apple bar and restarting, black screen and eventually froze with the bar a quarter way through. No this is the part I asked if the could uninstall it. No.

Now the only resolution they said was to wipe it clean reinstall factory settings and I lose everything. I have it backed up to hard drive but very upsetting cause I had no issues up till now. It’s almost like the bug happened so I could buy a new laptop. The associate asked me if I had another Mac at home to swap data into. I said I have a IPad Pro and my iPhone. He said well it would have to be an Intel Mac and not silicon. These devices are expensive and no I don’t just have another Mac computer lying around. Even if I bought the new MacBook they would not be able to swap cause of the intel chip that ended in 2023 he said. So fusterated!!! Anyways it’s with them now so they can try to fix the issue. Meanwhile my last 6 years on this device are gone and we will see if iCloud works because hesaidnalway use hard drive and don’t depend on iCloud. Which I do because I pay for iCloud for this very reason! Rethinking a lot right now about Apple.

As expected, trip to the service provider was fruitless. Thankfully they are just five minutes away, hence not too much time was wasted.

They ran some tests that shown that laptop is in the sound form and offered to try a clean install.

Since, I've moved all the files that I would like from it mounting it in the Target Disk Mode to another device, just in case the clean install remains the only option.

I also trying to clean the SystemExtensions, LaunchDaemons etc to eliminate the potential negative impact of those components. But so far it did not help unfortunately.

I also have the same model and there was no problem with the update. That computer has been a workhorse for many years without a single problem. It is my go to computer when I'm on the road and it has seen much harsher conditions than any other computer I own. Still going strong!
