My Apple Care expired 10 months ago so I hate to pay for a battery replacement when the diagnostics state it is in normal condition
AppleCare would have covered the battery if the Maximum Capacity had dropped below 80% in the first year of operation.

The battery will remain in "normal" condition until the Maximum Capacity drops below 80%. So you probably have a few more months before you will need to replace the battery.
The "rule of thumb" with the battery in the iPhone 14 was that you should expect about a 1% decline in Maximum Capacity for every month of operation. If you can get 3 years on the battery, you are doing very well.
My wife is a moderate user who ignores social apps and we had to replace the battery in her iPhone 14 at about 30 months, or two and a half years.
